A tonovet (tonopen) is used to measure intraocular pressure in the eye to help diagnose or aid in monitoring glaucoma.
Glaucoma is common in breeds such as Shih Tzus, French Bulldogs, Cocker Spaniels, and Pekingese. If you have one of these breeds, consider checking intraocular pressures as part of the annual exam. This gentle, painless measurement does not need any anesthetic and barley noticed by the animal. This is just one of the ways we care for your pet’s eyes.
Additional tests may include Schirmer Tear Test to test for dry eye, or Fluorescein Staining to check your pet’s eyes for ulcers or scratches.
